Plunge Immersion

URBAN IMMERSION EXPERIENCES & REFLECTIONS

St Ben's offers two options for an Urban Immersion experience.

First is a three-hour experience aimed at upper elementary or secondary students. Activities for this experience include reflecting on the 'real world' situations faced by Milwaukee's homeless, talking with a person who has moved from homelessness to a stable life situation, discussing the various aspects of ministry here at St Ben's, and considering hunger and its impact locally and globally. This experience usally includes lunch, so a donation tocover this expense and staff time is appreciated.

Second is an overnight experience intended for high school or college age students. This immersion experience usually begins on Friday night with participation in the Community Meal, followed by a period of reflection and discussion. Saturday is spent visiting various agencies that minister with the homeless, including shelters, drop in centers, and community service programs. This weekend experience can be tailored to the needs of the group and could be a one or two night event. Students provide a sleeping bag; St Ben’s provides floor space for sleeping and will arrange for meals. A donation of $20 per person per night is suggested to help defray the cost of food, staff, and utilities.

Contact Br Dave at 414.271.0135 ext 15 or at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to arrange these events.

Urban Plunge Teaches Social Justice by Irene Mehlos

Defying a winter weather advisory weekend, 13 Merrill High School Sophomores and Juniors together with 4 St. Francis Xavier parish adult chaperones took part in the annual Urban Plunge to the inner city parish of St. Benedict the Moor. And despite a cool financial climate, many local businesses and parishioners of St. Francis lent their support in the form of cash donations or contributions to the toiletry drive held by the students prior to their trip.
On March 27, four carloads of kids, gear and toiletry donations arrived at St. Ben’s, directly across the street from the Milwaukee County Jail, ready (or not) to spend the weekend interacting with the homeless. They hoped to learn from inner city churches and various agencies that address the needs of the homeless and working poor. St Ben’s parish has hosted 300-500 meal guests 6 nights a week since the late 1960’s at their “Loaves and Fishes Community Meal”. Their outreach includes a Prison Ministry, a Medical Clinic, and others such as providing toiletries and bus tickets to those in need. The many tooth brushes, tubes of paste, deodorant and other items shared by the Merrill community were received with grateful excitement!
In return, the local Capuchin Franciscans and meal guests welcomed the curious visitors from the north with open arms and hearts. The experience began with an opportunity to eat and talk with meal guests and afterwards, a Q&A session with a former gang member together with other inner city students being taught by former Merrill grad, Corey Mehlos, a Cap Corps volunteer. The meal security attendants, former guests, wore “Blue Shirts” displaying the community motto, “If You Want Peace, WORK for Justice”. At St. Ben’s, they do just that.
Nights were spent in sleeping bags on the floor of church meeting rooms. Clanging pipes and city noises were tolerated gratefully after witnessing homeless people skirting the barbed wire fence to sleep outside near a heated grate. Saturday was packed with visits to other ministries, including Casa Maria Catholic Worker House (hospitality to homeless families and refugees), Marquette University Center for Peacemaking, and several inner city churches responding to the needs of the poor with free tax preparation services or food pantries for neighbors in need. The Merrill students actually cheered the chance to pitch in some hard labor, moving dirt to expand space needed for a church basement food pantry.
The Sunday Mass experience topped off the cultural awakening with a lively Gospel Choir that made a two hour service fly by. On reflection during the weekend, students shared what they learned, in their own words:
• This weekend I learned the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and meeting people I wouldn’t normally meet.
• There are a lot of people that are a lot worse off than my family who’s going through some rough patches.
• I learned not to take anything for granted and be more aware of the hardships of others.
• I will remember all the people we saw at night sleeping under patios in sleeping bags—I’ve never seen that in real life, only in movies…people in the street are worse off than any of us ever thought!
• Peace and justice go hand in hand. If you want a world full of peace, then you also have to work for the world to be a just one, because you can’t have one without the other.
• Homeless people are human beings just like everyone else. I will remember the people most, and taking food to the people who slept outside.
• I was surprised that there were children—and whole families—who were homeless.
• This trip taught me some valuable lessons that I would never have been taught in school or by parents/guardians.

REFLECTION GROUPS

St Ben’s Community Meal hosts reflection groups as a way of orienting and educating them to service with the homeless and hungry population of Milwaukee. This opportunity is done in conjunction with the Meal and usually involves an orientation to St Ben’s Ministries, a chance to eat and talk with the Meal guests, and a prayerful reflection afterward. This experience typically takes about an hour and a half to two hours. Contact Br Dave at 414.271.0135 ext 15 or at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to arrange these events. A donation of $30 is appreciated to cover staff time.

Group

Your group or organization can help in so many ways!

Have your group assist at our GermanFest Run/Walk for the Hungry!

GermanFest has invited St. Ben's Community Meal to organize the GermanFest run/walk. Thanks to our volunteers and run co-host Bill Michaels of 620 WTMJ radio, each year our numbers have doubled! We welcome your group's help! Contact Br. Dave

Game Days

St Ben’s hosts a monthly Game Day on Saturday afternoon from 1-3p for our homeless clientele. Volunteers are needed to provide hospitality, snacks and beverages to the 25-35 people that participate in these events. If interested, contact Bonnie McMahon at 262.784.4095.

Host your own event....for example:

Recently Brian and April hosted their Annual Wine Tasting Extravaganza in their Elm Grove home. About 30 couples gathered to sample a host of delicious wines in a blind taste test. It was an evening of fun and lifely conversation, and raised over $3000 for St Ben's Community Meal.

Feeding Those Who Feed Others

Over two dozen representatives of sponsor groups met on Saturday, May 12, 2012 for a time of prayerful reflection. Liz Hanna, one of our regular hospitality ministers and a pastoral minister, facilitated the session with Brothers Dave Schwab and Rob Roemer. Using Luke 10:38-42, the story of Mary and Martha, Liz asked each person to share which type they were. Some said they were Mary’s, prayerful and reflective while others said Martha, serving by actions. Many offered that they were both, Mary’s at home and Martha’s when they arrived at St. Ben’s to serve the meal.

Liz said, “The motivation to serve at St. Ben’s comes from Scripture where we see Jesus feeding us like Mary to be a Martha.” A smiling volunteer said, “I serve as a greeter, I love to ask people how their day is going and I hear so many great stories.” Another volunteer commented on this year’s group of Marquette University students who serve saying, “They are one of the best at engaging guests that I’ve ever seen.”

After the break, Liz invited people to review the “blue sheet,” the mission, vision and values of the Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order. She asked them to reflect on the values and how they might live them out at the meal as either a Mary or Martha. Here are some responses:

Capuchin Value

How Mary would serve at St. Ben’s Community Meal

How Martha would serve at St. Ben’s Community Meal

Hospitality

Eating at the meal with the guests and visiting with them

Serving food but also smiling at the guests

Partnering

Praying at Church that week for those the sponsor group will serve

When short on volunteer help some of the guests themselves offer to serve

Joyful Service

Reflect joy

Cajole people into accepting vegetables with humor

Justice for All Creation

Work on serving others as family. Asking “why” questions, why people homeless or hungry and then telling Martha

Organizing the community to seek justice for the homeless and poor

Compassion

Accept where guests are at and love them there. Don’t try to fix them, recognize that God is working in their lives

Reflect on how God is unconditionally compassionate and accept that as how I need to act when serving

Empowerment

Sharing own experiences with guests as if talking them over with family

Serving in a most natural way all those who attend

People shared critiques as well. One that Br. Dave thought might add a new dimension to the Meal experience is to give all of the volunteers name tags. This would empower the guests to address people by name and encourage more communication. The meeting ended and many people said that it had been a wonderful experience that they’d take back to their home churches.

Luke 10:38-42 (NJB)

At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.

40 Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.'

41 But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things,

42 and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to be taken from her.'

The Community Meal is served six nights a week, Sunday to Friday, from 5:15 to 6:30. In 2010, 98,901 meals were served or an average of 325 per day.

75 sponsor groups prepare, transport and serve the meals. Most groups serve on a monthly basis, and some have contributed food and service since the Community Meal's beginning in 1970.

Hundreds of donors support the meal by providing food and monetary donations.

10-15 daily volunteers assist by serving beverages, working in the kitchen, cleaning tables & chairs, and performing a variety of tasks.

Hospitality ministers and "Blue Shirt" (security) staff ensure a hospitable and safe environment inside and outside the Meal Hall.

Hundreds of guests gather each evening to share a meal and companionship with each other.

Over 100 additional volunteers support the meal with their work in concession booths at the Bradley Center. Annually, this combined effort yields an additional revenue of about $20,000 for the Community Meal.

The Meal Staff coordinates the sponsor groups and volunteers to provide a nourishing dinner to be enjoyed by all in a friendly and peaceful setting. They also provide educational and immersion opportunities for people to deepen their understanding of the root causes of poverty and hunger.

The Community Meal Ministry Council works with the staff in helping to sharpen the vision and provide future direction.

Mission Statement

We believe in the innate dignity of all people. We recognize that God is present and active in every situation and person.

All who participate in the Meal–guests, sponsors, volunteers, and staff–are people with gifts and talents, needs and weaknesses.

We share a nutritious meal in a setting of hospitality and safety.

We commit ourselves to addressing not only the effects, but the root causes of hunger and poverty.

We collaborate with other individuals and groups to enhance our ministry.

We support an integrated spirituality that recognizes the relationship between faith, justice and service.

History of the Meal

The roots of St Ben’s Community Meal are found in the hearts of a young couple, Michael and Nettie Cullen. In 1966, inspired by the philosophy of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement, this Irish immigrant family founded Casa Maria House, which is located about a mile from St Benedict the Moor. Casa Maria's purpose was to promote and practice direct and personal sharing with the poor by receiving guests in their kitchen for a meal.

Mike & Nettie Cullen at the 35th Anniversary celebration in Nov 2005

A growing number of men, women and children from the neighborhood joined them for this daily meal, and it rapidly outgrew their small space, and they were forced to seek larger quarters. In collaboration with Capuchin Alex Luzi, and after much prayer and reflection, the Community Meal was moved to its current location at St Ben’s on November 13, 1970.

From the beginning there was a strong emphasis on the community aspect of the Meal. This was evidenced on two fronts. First, sponsor groups from a variety of churches and civic groups throughout the wider Milwaukee community committed to providing the Meal from Sunday through Friday evenings. Secondly, a sense of community and relationship was generated within the Meal Hall itself as sponsors, volunteers, guests, and staff came together to enjoy a nutritious meal in an environment of hospitality and safety.

Forty years later St Ben's and its many supporters continue to host the Community Meal, Sunday through Friday from 5:15 to 6:30p.

About Us

St. Ben's Community Meal helps in many ways....

New Life & New I.D.’s For Homeless
Recovering crack cocaine addict finds help in new ways at St. Ben’s

“Too many losses,” Joe sighed. He had come in to get help applying for an ID as his was lost when he was robbed. Joe is homeless and he said that he had been using crack cocaine for 20 years. “I stopped using crack last summer while serving a term in county jail. It has just cost me so much,” he said.

Joe started to list everything he had lost to his crack habit. “I lost my family, my job, my friends and now my marriage. Going through de-tox in jail was terrible, I endured five days of hallucinations without any medication. I started drinking alcohol as a child and using crack in my 20’s but now I have been accepted into a treatment program.”

“I count on St. Ben’s,” Joe continued, “and they have always helped me. I have received bus tickets, clothing, regular meals and now an ID!” Josh Hren, Volunteer Coordinator and Meal Chaplain, explained how the program works, “St. Ben’s Community Meal helps homeless people get their ID’s as without them they can’t get into a shelter, apply for GAMP (medical benefits) or find work. The ID’s cost $28 so we contribute $19 and ask the guest to bring a co-pay of $9.”
Josh added, “the DMV requires a birth certificate, social security card and other documents that homeless people normally don’t have with them. So St. Ben’s tells them where they can get help to get these forms together.” He continued, “then we give the homeless person a voucher for their ID and send them to the DMV which is 7 blocks away.”

Br. David Schwab, Capuchin said, “We used to process 10 people at a time. With Josh’s help we are processing ID voucher requests one at a time now. This gives us time to learn more about each guest’s individual needs and make referrals to programs that will help them get off the street.” Josh smiled and added, “And we always make sure we end our time together with a prayer.”

Someone had donated a case of new wallets. Joe was already looking through them for one to keep his new ID in once he had finished at the DMV. He also smiled and said, “I am lucky my father, brother and girlfriend have been encouraging me to continue being sober. And St. Ben’s has been a great help!”
